Did you know the east-west gravel road to the North of the House was originally a State Road? The road began as a buffalo trail & Indian trail. In 1852-53 it was surveyed as a State Road, & became the princiapl route between Des Moines & Council Bluffs. Earlier, in 1849-50, long wagon trains had traveled the road – then called Clarke’s Road-on the way to California & Oregon. As about this time, the Mornon Trail joined the road east of the site of Lewis. Many wagon trains passed through Lewis in 1859-60 on the way to gold & silver mines in California. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thank you for your service! We extend our deepest thank you to past Board members, Sharon Guffey-Lewis, Steve Lewis, & Dana Kunze for their many years of service to the Hitchcock House & to the Advisory Board. As Board President, Sharon has seen us through the last few years with grace & enthusiasm to get things done! She has been a very active guide as well & her knowledge has been a tremendous help! Steve has been invaluable in the gift shop, working outside, & as a trusted board member. We wish them all the best in their new adventures in Arizona! And look forward to seeing them back in Iowa occasionally! We also want to thank Dana Kunze for his irreplaceable knowledge on the Hitchcock’s, Cass County, Lewis & everything else! He has been here longer than any of us & has left us a foundation to build upon. Thank you for your years of dedication! Follow us online!
